Why are atheists so intent on scorning "believers"?
by Chariklo inuntil recently, i had never encountered this word "believers" used as it is being used on this board, to describe pejoratively a group of people.
it's not clear to me whether they scorn all who have a faith of some sort.
do they include buddhists, hindus, followers of the baha'i faith, followers of the cargo cult, native americans along with christians, or is it just christians who are honoured with this epithet?.

Agreed, Palmtree. It's been discussed to death especially over the last 2 days or so.

Maybe we need some ground rules?
1. If you make a claim, expect to have to defend it with facts and verfiable examples. Otherwise, it's your opinion.
2. Thou shalt not attack anyone personally.
3. If someone will not directly answer a question with facts or verfiable examples, that person agrees their position is based on faith.
4. Science may not be able to answer every question.
5. Someone just farted on my flight. It wasn't me. I think we can all agree that's gross.
6. We all, at some point, have to agree to disagee.
7. It's not about winning.
8. Science ain't perfect.
9. I am pretty damn awesome. Get used to it.
AWESOME. I especially love rule 5 and 9. They should be enforced.

The WT proves again that it does not understand Child Psychology
by Christ Alone ini posted this elsewhere, but wanted to create a thread about this specifically.
here is one way that i think the wt is absolutely wrong in it's advice on raising children:.
in the 1/13 awake they talk about mistakes that parents make with their children.

Your posts are always well thought out and balanced.
Thanks LisaRose! It hasn't always been that way. It was a rough start a few months ago. I'm still working on it, but I see my own tendency to only want to prove my own point and not listen to valid points that others are saying. I'm trying to change that. I also don't want to hurt anyone even though many believe that I have that "right" since it's just a discussion board.
00Dad, you're right. I was speaking of praising accomplisments OVER effort. Effort should be focused on in praising. A child should be made aware that efforts are what count and they will usually lead to great accomplishments. But if we ONLY praise accomplishments then it can lead to a child's stress and feelings of self doubt or self worth if they don't specifically find success in what they were trying to accomplish. If we only praise their accomplishments, a child will be made to feel that they just didn't try hard enough and THAT is why they didn't accomplish what they were trying to accomplish.

Do they include Buddhists, Hindus, followers of the Baha'i faith, followers of the cargo cult, Native Americans along with Christians, or is it just Christians who are honoured with this epithet?
When I use the term "believers", that is what I am referring to. If I'm talking about Christianity, I will use that term. But usually I am just talking about a belief in God in general. Not necessarily the Judeo/Christian understanding of God. That's just me personally though.
I've gotta say, though, when you say: Definitely favouring a divisive "them and us" attitude. I thought civilised people were trying to move a way from that", it sounds like you are having a them v us attitude.
I think it has to do with labels and stereotypes. We label a person "atheist" or "believer" or whatever else and we place a stereotype on all people that have that label. It's a sad thing. I do it way too often and I'm trying to be more conscious of it in the future.
But the them v us attitude DEFINITELY drives us away from each other and stops us (atheist and believer) from considering what points the "other" side may have that is valid.

Good point, 00Dad. They do know what they are doing. I guess my point should be that they don't understand HEALTHY child psychology.

As was seen in the article and through our experience, when we are praised for our accomplishments rather than our efforts and WHO we are, it damages us forever.

I want to clarify something for myself. I was extremely praised...when I did something for the organization. That's what made leaving so hard. My parents were filled with joy when I became a regular pioneer, when I gave talks, and when I went to bethel. I was praised for THOSE accomplishments. When I left bethel, the disappointment in my parents eyes was heartbreaking. When i stopped pioneering, they were confused. When I left jws, they were angry and then crushed. Talk about feeling like a complete and utter failure. When your mom can't speak through her tears because you left Jehovah and now he is going to kill you...it's unbareable. When the only things you were praised for are the things you are forced to give up, it does a huge number on your self esteem. When your parents stop talking to you because you are now an utter failure, it's almost too much.

I'm sure he's thinking "they won't let me back because I proved them all wrong." Last night I read through his "great crowd" thread. He was on his high horse until leolaias post. He said "I will research it" and then promptly had to shut up because her argument was air tight.

Again, good point Zid. You and several others were here to help. And there was a PLETHORA of information that was given to her to help her get started in her research. If she STILL was unsure, especially after only visiting with the JWs a couple times, then there was probably very little that anyone could have done to help...
